MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica (May 2, 2006) -- Chukka Caribbean Adventures has partnered with David Dick, owner and CEO of Cool Products & Hot Ideas to operate the government owned and newly restored Lighthouse and the old Her Majesty’s Prison. Vacationers will have easy access to these attractions when they board the new Hop-On/Hop-off Bus Tour at the Grand Turk Cruise Center pier. They will be able to get on and off the buses as they loop around Grand Turk throughout the day.
“Renovation of these historic attractions have been made possible by the commitment of the Turks and Caicos government and its partners to the development of the Grand Turk Cruise Center and the island’s tourism infrastructure.” says Marc Melville, co-managing director of Chukka Caribbean Adventures. “The option for passengers to get on and off the bus tour is a relatively new idea for the Caribbean and we think that it will prove to be very popular, allowing visitors to personalize their sightseeing experience and to have easy access to these historic sites.”
The old Her Majesty’s Prison in the historic downtown area of Cockburn Town dates from the early 1800’s. Visitors can explore the 16 cells that didn’t always keep their inmates safely locked away, as well as explore the surrounding grounds. Commissioned at the insistence of American traders, the Lighthouse was built in the U.K., transported to Grand Turk and constructed at the northern tip of the island in 1852. Unfortunately, the illumination from its eight whale-oil lamps and reflectors did not live up to expectations and wrecks continued on the northern reefs during its use. In addition to touring the Lighthouse, visitors can explore two nature trails providing breathtaking views of the nearby cliffs and coves. Both attractions offer refreshments at their on-site bar and grills as well as new gift shops and public bathrooms.
Chukka Caribbean Adventures launched its tour operation on Grand Turk in February 2006, their sixth outpost in the region including Belize, The Bahamas and their award winning operations in Jamaica. In addition to the operation of the Grand Turk Lighthouse and Her Majesty’s Prison, its tour offerings -- “Horseback Ride ‘N Swim,” the “4x4 Safari,” and brand new “Dune Buggy Safari – have proved very popular and have received outstanding reviews from consumers since their debut.
